The Parent Training Program for Teaching Toilet Skills may be able to teach parents how to toilet train their children with autism.

This study asked whether the Parent Training Program for Teaching Toilet Skills helped parents potty train their children with autism. The program involved two parent meetings and one home visit. The therapy was effective for 2 children with autism and mental retardation, and 1 child with mental retardation (3-6 years old). The children learned toilet skills in 18-22 therapy sessions (parents teaching their child). The authors said that involving parents in the therapy training program may be helpful for teaching toilet skills to their children with autism.

The authors reviewed all of the randomized studies of mental health treatments for children and adolescents over the last 41 years.... Researchers tested modeling, goal setting, parent education, and reinforcement. The authors hope that researchers can use this information to figure out what treatments are well-studied, and what treatments might be researched more.

A combination of risperidone therapy with parent-led behavioral therapy may be helpful for children with autism and more severe behavioral challenges.... The parenting program "Stepping Stones Triple P" may teach helpful strategies to parents of children with autism.

Parents of 29 children (2-9 years old) with autism received training using the Stepping Stones Triple P program. Parents learned how to deal with behavioral issues for children with autism. Strategies included timeout, physical guidance, and blocking. Many of the parents also learned how to use Comic Strip Conversations and Social Stories. Most of the parents liked the parent training, and said the strategies they learned were helpful when dealing with their children with autism. Read more...
