A successful early intensive behavioral therapy program includes parent involvement, different settings, and flexibility to meet the needs of individual children with autism. This paper describes the United Kingdom Young Autism Project (UK YAP), which follows the UCLA Model of ABA. The project sets up a service model for ABA therapy that includes parent training, therapist supervision, and progress checks to offer the best early ABA therapy possible based on scientific research. Research suggests that effective applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy includes intensive therapy for 30 or more hours per week, strong supervision of the therapy progress, and a plan that works to meet all of the needs of the child.

The Junior Detective Training Program may be helpful in teaching social skills to children with Asperger syndrome.

The Junior Detective Program is a 7-week program that includes a computer game, small group sessions, parent training sessions, and teacher handouts. The parents of the children said that the children had improved social skills after finishing the program. The skills were maintained at 6-week and 5-month follow-up. The children in the study did not become better at reading emotions. Read more...

About half of children with autism who receive Floortime therapy for 8-12 months show improved function.

Most people agree that young children with autism can be helped by early and intense intervention. Two of the most common types of early intense therapies are applied behavior analysis (ABA) and a social approach to therapy such as the developmental, individualized, and relationship-oriented (DIR) model. While the ABA approach has been shown to work, it is hard because it requires 40 hours a week of therapy. This paper reports on the use of DIR (also known as Floortime) to treat children with autism. The DIR model supports parents as the main play partner of the child. Read more...
