Vitamin B12 and folic acid may help to normalize the metabolism of children with autism.

Around 74% of parents use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat their children with autism. The goal of this study was to show whether or not vitamin B12 and folic acid could improve markers in the blood of children with autism. The authors measured SAM:SAH and GSH:GSSG in the blood of 40 children aged 2 to 7 years who had autism. The children were given 75 µg/kg of vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) 2 times/week and 400 µg folinic acid 2 times/day for 3 months. The vitamins improved the blood results in the children, but did not bring the blood results to normal levels.

Parents may be able to help teens with autism learn social skills and deepen friendships.

This study looked at whether parent-assisted social skills intervention could help 33 teens (13-17 years of age) with autism to improve social skills and friendships. The study used the program PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills). This study found that parents and teens believed that the teens learned social skills with the PEERS program. Teachers did not report changes in social skills in kids in the program. The authors think that this is because very few teachers turned in the reports on the teens.

Relationship development intervention (RDI) may be helpful as part of a larger autism treatment program.

The purpose of this article is to teach psychiatrists about RDI. RDI has been in use for ten years now and it is a major relationship-based tool for autism intervention. RDI consultants focus on family support and parent training. They also focus on helping any IQ weaknesses in the child. The author notes that while RDI has not been studied in outcome based research, the thought behind the therapy makes sense and therefore the therapy likely offers value to the child with autism and the family.

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) may be helpful when teaching a child with autism to stop throwing things in the trash can.

Some children with autism spend a great deal of time straightening items and this may get in the way of living a normal life. Stopping or blocking the child from straightening has been shown to help stop the straightening behavior. Sometimes, though, stopping the child from straightening can make him angry and bring out aggressive behavior. This case study describes the use of ABA to help a 16-year-old boy with autism who spent a great deal of time placing items in a straight line and throwing them away. The treatment was able to help stop him from throwing things away, at least in front of staff and parents.
