In this article a father and English teacher describes how Shakespeare inspired the thoughts of two boys with autism. The author notes that normal and autistic are single points on an autistic spectrum. All of us have moments when we tune out or show poor social skills. He notes that the study of Shakespeare provides a good way for all children to learn that words do not always have simple meanings. Core autism symptoms such as social communication deficits may be improved by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Social communication problems have proven hard to change through social skills training. This pilot study was designed to see the effect of a CBT program on parent-reported core autism symptoms. The study had 19 children (7 to 11 years old) with high-functioning autism who received 16 sessions of CBT. The CBT program focused on children’s emotion regulation, on-site social coaching, parent training, and school support. The authors found that parent-reported autism symptoms were lower in the CBT group than in the waitlist control group.

Family therapy such as stress management, problem solving training, and supportive counseling may help parents manage the stress associated with autism and Asperger’s syndrome.

The aim of this study was to describe the stress of parents caring for children with Asperger’s syndrome and compare it to the stress of parents caring for children with autism. The study had 238 autism families and 38 Asperger’s syndrome families in Japan. The study found that while both groups of parents were stressed, more parents of children with Asperger’s syndrome (67%) were highly stressed than were parents of children with autism (57%).
