The parenting program "Stepping Stones Triple P" may teach helpful strategies to parents of children with autism.

Parents of 29 children (2-9 years old) with autism received training using the Stepping Stones Triple P program. Parents learned how to deal with behavioral issues for children with autism. Strategies included timeout, physical guidance, and blocking. Many of the parents also learned how to use Comic Strip Conversations and Social Stories. Most of the parents liked the parent training, and said the strategies they learned were helpful when dealing with their children with autism.

Parenting classes may help parents to better understand and parent their child with autism.

Stepping Stones Triple P is a parenting program that teaches parents about social learning. This study was designed to see if this intervention for the parents of children with autism can affect the behavior of children with autism. The therapy program was able to teach parents to see that their children's behavior was a symptom of the autism and not caused by the child being bad. The parents who received the intervention were less likely to overreact to bad behavior. This change in parent belief did not change the child's behavior, however.
