Applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy may be a useful feeding intervention for children with autism.

This case study was designed to see if a type of ABA therapy (positive behavior support) could help a child with autism learn to accept food. This type of family-centered therapy seemed to result in lasting changes in the child's eating behavior. The therapy also involved a larger support process that improved family life. The six-year-old boy began to accept food (scrambled eggs, hot dogs, etc.) that he had stopped eating before the study started. The authors suggest that studies be done with children of different ages and different types of families.

Videos may help people with autism learn to perform new tasks and behave in new ways.

This article describes how videos can be made and used to help teach children with autism how to do certain behaviors. Computers and camcorders have made it possible for many people to make their own good videos. Studies have shown that videos of a person with autism (video self-modeling) are helpful for maintaining behaviors and helping the person to generalize behaviors. The author suggests that the behavior or task be video taped only if the task is developmentally right for the person. Videos can also be made at school, but families must first give written consent.

There appears to be a role for Social Stories and video models woven together into a social skills therapy program in the schools.

The purpose of this study was to test a method of teaching social skills at school to children with high functioning autism. The study used the computer to present Social Stories and video models. All three boys (6-10 years old) in the study improved their social skills so much that their social skills were almost at the same level as their peer's social skills. The teachers liked the social skills treatment program. Writing good Social Stories requires some training and practice, however, and the authors suggest that schools offer training to staff in how to write Social Stories.

Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, by Scattone, D., Tingstrom DH, and Wilczynski SM, published in 2006, summarized Apr 2, 2007

While social stories therapy can help some children with autism learn positive behaviors, it is probably best at helping children learn to stop doing negative behaviors.

This study looked at whether social stories could be used alone to teach children with autism to improve social behavior. This study was different from other studies in that it used only social stories and not any other type of behavior therapy or treatment. Only one of the three boys in the study showed an increase in good social behavior after therapy with social stories. This boy (age 13) was able to learn to have good social exchange during free time. He learned from the social stories how to talk about his after-school hobbies with his classmates.
