Understanding Tito

Jan 28, 2008 by Anonymous

In the years since my son was diagnosed  I have met some truly giving, gifted and dedicated individuals that have elevated my understanding and appreciation for another person’s humanity.   Soma Mukhopadhyay is at the top of that list.  Soma is one of the most remarkable pioneers that the world of Autism may ever know.  Wife, mother, teacher are just a few of the titles she holds . Powerhouse comes to mind. Phenomenal is another. Single handedly she has taught her own autistic son Tito, who has now authored his 3rd book titled “How can I talk if my Lip’s don’t move? ,through a method she designed called RPM(Rapid Prompting Method). This method is distinguishable from other methods because the primary goal is to teach and that learning is taking place. Through this process independent communication is achieved.

Tito’s latest book invites the reader into the innermost workings of his amazing mind. Tito’s own account of how his sensory and perception are “scattered”, as he puts it, gives such insight to some of the most unanswered questions that many of us have about autism. He writes with such conviction and truth about his life experiences such as when he realized he couldn’t speak, learning how to write independently and the importance of the enriched education he recieved from his teacher and mother.. Soma.Tito is an inspiring young man with a resounding message for the world.

From the foreword written by Margaret L. Bauman M.D.,Ph. D to the Final words by Tito this book is a must read from beginning to end for any parent ,professional or individual who would like to learn more about autism.

Visit  www.halo-soma.org to purchase Tito’s new book  and learn more about RPM.

“How Can I Talk if my Lip’s don’t move” can also be purchased on Amazon.com or your local bookstore.

12 Days of Christmas...

Dec 22, 2007 by Anonymous
12 Days of Christmas....
My son started getting in the Christmas spirit way before I did. Even at the hospital after having a colonoscopy/endoscopy he says to the discharge nurse "Ho,ho,ho" This was the day before Thanksgiving. After a chat with a friend the other day..I realized I had not given thought to whether he believes in Santa.I get my pen/paper and as I give choices and I learn ..he believes. I searched my mind trying to recall if we ever discounted "Santa" around him.Assured that we hadn't I ask him the following day, again he announced that Santa is real and he is the one that brings his presents(not mom) This Christmas is so different from the others.Despite the challenges this year has brought us and those still in ahead of us..my son loves Christmas. He jumped up and down after I dressed his tree in blue lights..his favorite color. This I learned at our 1st camp. He's played Disney's 12days of Christmas ,Wiggly Christmas,Barney's Nite before Christmas and alas..Barney's Christmas Star.Over, and over . Today I asked him what he'd like me to get him for Christmas..thinking I'd already pegged it. He then points to "Train"... Needless to say..I will be up late on this night ..searching the Internet for my baby's "Train" .As I look back at the year I am grateful for the things I've learned from and about my autistic 11yr old then I could have ever known..all due to a method called RPM (Rapid Prompting Method) Our trips to Austin,TX to a place called HALO(Helping Autism Through Learning &Outreach) has changed the dynamics of our lives, and for that I am even more Thankful this Christmas!

Many Thanks to SomaMukhopadhyay!

I would like to share with you all a story done by a local CBS station in Austin ,TX. The journalist , Judy Maggio, did a great job in bringing a more positive light to autism rather than the negative stereotyping we often cringe to watch in the media nowadays.

The story focuses on a clinic in Austin callled H.A.L.O (Helping Autism through Learning&Outreach) where teacher Soma Mukhopadhyay teaches students 1:1 each day using the method she created to teach her own autistic son ,Tito Mukhopadhyay,RPM. This is an incredible method where as it combines teaching academics and eliciting independent communication from those who struggle with verbal communication. One of the unique things about RPM is that it's not exclusive to autism. It can be applied with students that have various diagnosises that also have communication challenges. We have been learning RPM over the past year,as I've written about before, and I hope that as other's find out more about RPM that they too will see that there's so much more to our children than what most have assumed for so long.
