Autism Therapy: respite care

definition of respite care: Respite means a short break in order to rest. Respite care gives parents and caretakers of children with autism a break from the constant care of a child with autism. Respite care is meant to relieve stress and prevent burn out in people who are very important to the life of the child. Friends, relatives, neighbors, and community associations can offer respite care.

Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, by Ruble, LA, and McGrew JH, published in 2007, summarized Dec 19, 2007

Most families use between three and five different autism therapy services for their child.

This study was designed to see which therapies parents think help their children with autism. This study is different from most treatment studies, which focus on the effect of the treatment as measured by an observer. The study looked at nine types of common autism therapy services and found that parents liked in-home therapy and drug therapy best of all. Other therapy services included in the survey were: inpatient hospitalization, family training, individual therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, case management, and respite care. The survey included the parents of 113 children in Kentucky.

The families in Diamond Bar who have children with autism have gotten their first support groupSan Gabriel Valley Special Needs Support Group. Parents who have received a new diagnosis now have a place to find available therapies, such as ABA, floor therapy, respite care, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. What makes this support group unique is that it’s online on Facebook and parents can get information and advocate and find support at any time of the day or night.

The Comprehensive Autism Medical Assessment and Treatment Center is adding additional therapies to its service offerings. Founder, Dr. Paul Abend, whom we've highlighted before, reached out to several therapists to help form Bright Star Therapy. This collaboration will add speech, physical and occupational therapies to children with autism. In addition, there will be a focus on assisting parents to continue therapies at home. While the kids get therapy, parents may receive "preparation of home schedules to complement school plans or counseling for a sibling who may feel lost in the constant shuffle of doctor and therapeutic sessions." In the future, Bright Star Therapy hopes to host weekend respite sessions so that children can partake in therapeutic activities while parents and caregivers can take a break.

Respite Care

Here is a place in Maryland near Annapolis: http://www.aamentalhealth.org/warmline.html - it’s kind of like a 311 only for social services. Actually, the entire attached document has numbers to call depending on where she lives.

Respite care provides people with temporary relief from tasks associated with caregiving. I have pasted below information for Washington DC. Each state should have its own version of respite care

Here’s a county list for Virginia: http://askunitedway.communityos.org/local/os040/posting_area/local/CentralPoints.htm. VA also has a program called Family Day Systems (FDS) whereby children are referred to available day care centers. Here’s a definition: http://www.autism-pdd.net/respite.html, http://www.autism-pdd.net/disability-resources.html#asssist

And finally a phone number: http://www.goprincegeorgescounty.com/Government/AgencyIndex/Social_Services/child_care.asp?nivel=subfoldmenu(1,3) – this is actual Child Care Assistance, found by googling: respite care Washington DC.
