Autism Therapy: respite care

definition of respite care: Respite means a short break in order to rest. Respite care gives parents and caretakers of children with autism a break from the constant care of a child with autism. Respite care is meant to relieve stress and prevent burn out in people who are very important to the life of the child. Friends, relatives, neighbors, and community associations can offer respite care.

Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, by Ruble, LA, and McGrew JH, published in 2007, summarized Dec 19, 2007

Most families use between three and five different autism therapy services for their child.

This study was designed to see which therapies parents think help their children with autism. This study is different from most treatment studies, which focus on the effect of the treatment as measured by an observer. The study looked at nine types of common autism therapy services and found that parents liked in-home therapy and drug therapy best of all. Other therapy services included in the survey were: inpatient hospitalization, family training, individual therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, case management, and respite care. The survey included the parents of 113 children in Kentucky.

Tina Robbins realized just how special her Kalamazoo community was when they stepped up to help her out with her son with autism. Robbins is a single mom and her son Logan is a non-verbal youngster with autism. Robbins explained that Logan has sensory issues, wandering, and self-injurious behavior. As an advocate for her son, she reached out to Kalamazoo Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (KCMHSAS) for help. Jeff Patton, CEO of KCMHSAS, explained that Kalamazoo is a caring community and different agencies pooled their resources to help Logan as well as other children with special needs. Western Michigan University provided speech and music therapy. He received his service dog, Denver, from Paws with a Cause. Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center provided equine therapy, while Project Lifesaver made sure that Logan didn’t wander away from home. Tina also gets help; Woods-Edge Learning Center and Family and Children’s Services Respite Program provides respite services, so that she can be re-energized and effective when caring for Logan.

DisabilityScoop highlighted a recent study from the University of Pennsylvania, which found that increasing respite for caregivers may decrease the number of children with autism who are admitted to psychiatric hospitals. The study found that for every $1,000 that a state spent on respite, hospitalization decreased by 8%. Researchers believe that having to hospitalize a child with autism is sometimes because the stress on the family becomes too overwhelming, and that respite assistance could help. The researchers explained, “Identifying ways to reduce psychiatric hospitalizations among those with autism is important, because previous research has found that those with the disorder are far more likely to be hospitalized than their peers with other psychiatric or developmental conditions.”

Sonoma State University Psychology department worked with North Bay Regional Center to open the Collaborative Autism Training and Support (CATS) program. Psychology students are trained to work with kids with autism in the community. Students get hands-on training and are able to provide a respite for parents. Along with coursework, CATS provides family resources and community autism awareness programs. The parents call CATS a grassroots program where the community had a need and the University stepped in to meet it. Already more than 200 students have given over 15,000 hours of free support to families with autism as well as completing training in autism theory and interventions.

Lisa Jo Rudy, mother of a child with autism, writes frequently on the subject. In a recent post, she spoke about the struggles parents can have when their child is diagnosed with autism. Visits with friends become few and far between; it may be hard to get in a good meal; and it may be difficult to leave the house. Rudy talks about depression and the need for a break from every-day hardships. The article focuses on resources for respite, coping with stress, depression, and finding grants to help with family finances.

Respite Care

Here is a place in Maryland near Annapolis: http://www.aamentalhealth.org/warmline.html - it’s kind of like a 311 only for social services. Actually, the entire attached document has numbers to call depending on where she lives.

Respite care provides people with temporary relief from tasks associated with caregiving. I have pasted below information for Washington DC. Each state should have its own version of respite care

Here’s a county list for Virginia: http://askunitedway.communityos.org/local/os040/posting_area/local/CentralPoints.htm. VA also has a program called Family Day Systems (FDS) whereby children are referred to available day care centers. Here’s a definition: http://www.autism-pdd.net/respite.html, http://www.autism-pdd.net/disability-resources.html#asssist

And finally a phone number: http://www.goprincegeorgescounty.com/Government/AgencyIndex/Social_Services/child_care.asp?nivel=subfoldmenu(1,3) – this is actual Child Care Assistance, found by googling: respite care Washington DC.
