Teachers seem to be able to limit problem behaviors at school by using many different interventions.

Children with autism may show aggression, self-injury and be unable to follow rules. This article reviewed the published studies on interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder in order to decrease problem behaviors at school. The study found 73% of the time the chosen intervention was said to have worked. The interventions worked whether or not the teacher matched the intervention to the child. Since autism is becoming more common, nurses need to know about the different therapies that are used.

This short paper reviews some of the basic therapies for autism so that nurses are more aware of the disease. It describes for nurses how both drug therapies and non-drug therapies are used. Some studies have shown that diets such as the gluten-free diet or casein-free diet can help children with autism. While there is no cure for autism, drug therapy is used to help with aggression, self-injury, and hyperactivity that may come with autism. Behavioral therapy such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy can be used to treat self-injury behavior and should be tried before drug therapy.

This article reviews the data on the use of behavioral therapy to treat self injury in people with autism. ABA therapy has been used for at least 40 years to treat self-injury. In some cases, the ABA therapy has used punishment and this has worked to stop the self-injury. Newer versions of ABA therapy use positive reinforcement (as opposed to punishment) to stop behavior.
