Qigong massage therapy may help reduce the symptoms of autism in young children, both at school and at home.

This study looked to see if 5 months of qigong massage therapy would improve symptoms of autism compared to controls. The study showed that qigong massage reduced symptoms of autism as measured by tests of behavior and abilities. The children who received qigong massage showed improved sensory and physical systems. The children also gained skills for social learning. The authors plan to expand the study to look at the effects of qigong massage on the nervous system (vagal tone).

Parenting classes may help parents to better understand and parent their child with autism.

Stepping Stones Triple P is a parenting program that teaches parents about social learning. This study was designed to see if this intervention for the parents of children with autism can affect the behavior of children with autism. The therapy program was able to teach parents to see that their children's behavior was a symptom of the autism and not caused by the child being bad. The parents who received the intervention were less likely to overreact to bad behavior. This change in parent belief did not change the child's behavior, however.

A California mom wrote a social story for her child with autism before a cross-country plane trip. The story explained to the child what would be likely to happen on the plane trip each step of the way. For example, she wrote, "Airports sometimes have long lines. While I'm in line it is important to stay with my mom and dad because they keep me safe. If I get tired of the line, I can sit in the stroller." And another story part explained, "When I am on the airplane it is important for me to be nice to my fellow travelers. This will mean I will always have to have calm hands, calm feet, calm voice and a calm body. I will need to stay in my seat with my seatbelt on." One place to get useful information on how to create social stories is at the Gray Center for Social Learning and Understanding in Michigan.

Social Thinking

Oct 29, 2008 by Anonymous

“Social thinking” is required prior to the development of social skills and successful social interaction. Michelle Garcia Winner coined the term to describe the treatment program she continues to develop that has helped thousands of students with their social learning. Individuals with autism, including high-functioning autism and Asperger Syndrome, ADHD and similar challenges have benefited greatly from this treatment approach.
