Treatment with paliperidone helped an adult with Asperger Syndrome who had severe behavioral problems and autism symptoms.

The case report said 25-year-old man had severe anxiety, delusions (not in touch with reality), irritability, and other problems. He also had poor communication and social skills. He was admitted to a hospital because of his severe symptoms, and was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. He received 6 mg daily of paliperidone, which is related to risperidone. The drug therapy reduced his symptoms. He also had better social skills. After 4 months of treatment, he improved so much that he moved out of his parent's house to live in an apartment of his own. In China, children with autism spectrum disorders may be more likely to receive acupuncture or herbal medicines than applied behavior analysis (ABA).

Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in China,but there are few resources for autism therapy for children these disorders. Therapies often included a mix of traditional medicines and acupuncture with sensory integration therapy. ABA was used less often. A Chinese study reported improvements in social and communication skills with acupuncture. There were very few scientific studies that evaluated the effectiveness of these therapies in China. The largest problem is the severe shortage of trained therapists to help children with autism in China. Few schools and hospitals are currently able to provide therapy services. Read more...

Therapies and interventions that focus on behaviors, or communication and social skills may be helpful to children with autism.

This report talks about different articles that each look at a type of autism therapy. The authors of this report looked at 9 review articles of behavioral therapies, and 7 review articles of communication-focused therapies. Many of the articles reported improvements in children's behavior and communication, but the authors said that many of the studies used poor scientific methods and were incomplete. They said studies should be done more carefully to help figure out exactly which therapies are helpful. Read more...
