A speech-generating device may improve behaviors in children with autism who cannot speak.

This case report describes the use of a speech-generating device by a 7-year-old boy with autism. The boy could not speak, but he did make sounds with his voice. Sometimes the sounds were not appropriate. He also had problem behaviors; for example, he would use aggression when he wanted attention or wanted to play with someone. The boy was taught how to use multiple options on the device. He used the device on the playground and during gym. When he used the device, he had problem behaviors 0 to 20% of the total time (for example, while on the playground). Without the device, he had problem behaviors 40 to 80% of the total time.

International Journal for Autism: A Research Summary, by Nunes, DRP, published in 2008, summarized Feb 4, 2009

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) such as sign language, picture exchange communication system (PECS), and speech generating devices may be able to help people with autism to communicate.

This review article describes the types of AAC that are used to treat autism. The authors reviewed 56 studies published over 27 years. Most of the studies were case studies and looked at spoken language. The authors were not able to conclude whether or not one form of AAC is better than another form of AAC for people with autism. The authors were pleased to note that their review has shown that people have stopped viewing language as the same as speech.

Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, by Schlosser, RW, Sigafoos J., Luiselli JK, Angermeier K., Harasymowyz U., Schooley K., and Belfiore PJ, published in 2007, summarized Aug 18, 2008

Speech output devices may not be a good way to teach nonverbal children with autism to speak.

This study was designed to see if speech output devices (synthetic speech) help five children (aged 8-10) with autism learn to speak. The main focus was on teaching the children to learn how to make requests. The study showed no big difference between when the children were given a speech output device and when they were not. Some children did do slightly better with the speech output device. Only one of the five children showed improved speech at the end of the study.

Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics, by Thunberg, G., Ahlsen E., and Sandberg AD, published in 2007, summarized Oct 8, 2007

Speech-generating devices (SGD) can help children with autism do more things with their family.

This study looked to see if SGDs can help children with autism to talk in the home. The authors found that the SGD helped all four children in the study do everything that was measured in the study. The authors found that during mealtime, the family stayed closer to the child with autism when he was using the SGD. During story reading, the SGD allowed the child with autism ask and answer questions about the story. The SGD also allowed the children to talk about their day at school.
