Education and Training in Developmental Disabilities, by Ruef, MB, Nefdt N., Openden D., Elmensdorp S., Harris KC, and Robinson S., published in 2009, summarized Jan 20, 2010

A university program that combines special education teacher training with on-hand experience with people in the autism community may benefit students and people with autism.

Two universities worked together to offer a training program for special education teachers at the Master’s or Doctoral level. The training program also offered community services to people with autism. There were three “tiers” (parts) to the program. In each tier the teachers received more training than in the tier before. The program was found to be helpful for the teachers, although there were some problems. The authors think that this type of program may work for training special education teachers in a one year timeline (Master’s level). The teachers get quality experience, and children with autism get some benefits from the community service.

International Journal of Behavioral Consultation and Therapy, by Mueller, MM, and Nkosi A., published in 2007, summarized Nov 11, 2008

Many children with autism may have behavior problems, and Behavior Analytic Consultation to Schools (BACS) may be a good approach to managing students with severe problem behaviors in the school.

Most therapists agree that children with severe behavior should be treated and then followed to make sure that the treatment is working. The BACS model was designed as a way of looking at the child's behavior at school and creating a treatment plan. Other behavior models rely on teachers being trained to assess the behavior of a student. The BACS model does not rely on teacher training, but instead uses experts trained in BACS. This paper describes two case studies of children with severe behavior problems who were treated using the BACS model.

Island Autism Moms, a group on Bainbridge Island in Washington State, is creating autism awareness in their public schools. The group, which started in 2007, has grown from a gathering of moms to an organization that is trying to improve education for their kids with autism. The parents discovered that their main concern was academics and fear that the local schools didn’t know how to deal with their children. They created a program called Wings. Wings looks for funding and organizes services for school children. They pay for a coordinator to work with schools and students. They also fund teacher training on various topics regarding autism.

The Northwest Regional Education Service District Hillsboro Education Center recently opened in Oregon to help kids with autism. The center is the first in Oregon to provide both teacher training and teacher/parent observation. There are 500 three-to-five year olds served by the center, which also offers one-on-one and online training. Part of the focus is for special ed and other teachers to learn techniques and interventions for working with autism so that they can go back to their school districts and train still more teachers. In addition to the chance to observe their children, parents can spend time in the toy room to see what items and colors and textures their child prefers so that they don’t waste money on items that may not help their child.
