Several types of therapies may help children develop "theory of mind," which is important for social interactions.

"Theory of mind" is the ability to recognize beliefs, intentions, desires, and other mental states. People learn to recognize these mental states in themselves and others. Theory of mind is very important for social interactions, allowing people to understand what others might be thinking or feeling. The authors said to think of it as "mind-reading." The authors describe theory of mind deficits in people with autism. Several different types of therapies are being used to teach theory of mind to children with autism. These include behavioral therapy, computer-assisted learning (or CAI), and Social Stories. These and other therapies have helped children learn these skills.

Exceptional Parent Magazine, by Blacher, J., and Howell E., published in 2007, summarized Oct 16, 2007

Children with autism can be taught to think socially by using movies with broad gestures and facial cues.

Having Theory of Mind is key to developing social skills. Theory of Mind affects life with other people, school, following directions, and understanding things that happen in society. There is some research that says that Theory of Mind can be taught. Some speech therapists teach Theory of Mind by teaching social thinking skills. While these techniques have not yet been tested in research studies, they do seem to work.

Children who have recovered from autism may still have some problems with language.

This study tested children who had been diagnosed as autistic and had, as a result of therapy, recovered from their autism. The children were grade-school-aged and functioned normally in school. They did well on standardized tests. They were able to use normal grammar and speak clearly. They did not do as well as other children on story telling and "Theory of Mind."? The authors note that the study was small and included only 14 children.

Reviews in Neurological Diseases, by Baskin, JH, Sperber M., and Price BH, published in 2006, summarized Mar 22, 2007

Risperidone therapy may help children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) who are aggressive.

There currently aren't any drugs that can be used specifically to treat Asperger Syndrome (AS). Children with AS often have other medical issues, however, such as Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. These other medical issues can be treated with drugs. Behavioral treatment programs can be used with children with AS to help children understand emotions, understand someone elseâ??s perspective (theory of mind) and solve problems. It is important for families to learn about AS so that they can help their child.
